David Anderson grew up in the South African bushveld where he came in daily contact with a variety of animals from vervet monkeys to white and black rhinos. He was sent to boarding school at an early age and recieved some unwelcome attention for caricaturing the teaching staff before finally being asked to illustrate the dormitory walls. This went to his head and he has been drawing ever since.

He worked as the political cartoonist and graphics editor for a number of South African publications including the anti-apartheid mouthpiece The Rand Daily Mail until it was forced to close and then for The Johannesburg Star, the country&;s largest daily paper. He moved with his family to Canada in 1990 where he has worked for many of the major newspapers,  in advertizing and writing and illustrating children&;s books amongst other things.

David has always had a deep commitment to wildlife conservation and this is evident in his children&;s stories and illustrations. Along with his two collections of animal short stories, he has illustrated a number of children&;s books and has had illustrations, stories and a one act play incorporated into the South African school curriculum.

Interactive Readings

Readings are done with a view to promoting literacy and a love of books from an early age. Starting with how I evolved as an illustrator and author, I then read from my animal stories [folk tale style] which are humourous and fast paced as well as having wildlife facts included in the text. This is usually followed by a discussion on story and character development along with the combining of text and illustration. I feel that wildlife conservation and a love of nature are vital qualities to pass on to children and this is evident in my subject matter and part of the message that I deliver. Q and A sessions involve the combination of writing and imagery, practical demonstrations of illustration, character development and coposition etc.
