Elly MacKay lives in Owen Sound with her husband and children. She works from the attic of her old Victorian house. She is known for creating unique images through using layers of paper, light and photography. She is also known for stories set in nature. She grew up in an old church in the countryside and her art and stories often reflect this. 

Elly attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and the University of Canterbury for printmaking but also had an informal education in paper arts by visiting members of the Movable Book Society by train when she was a teen. Elly also has a Bachelor in Education from Nipissing University. She worked as the School Programs Coordinator at the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery and as an Arts Educator at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. 

She now spends her days writing, creating art, illustrating or visiting schools as an author/illustrator.Butterfly Park was an Honour book for the Blue Spruce, Forest of Reading in 2016. She also creates covers for novels, most notably, the recent Penguin Random House Canada editions of the Anne of Green Gables series. Elly’s work has been shown in galleries and stores in Canada, Australia, the United States, Korea and Sweden. She recently had a solo show in Virginia. Her work was also shown at the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show and is on permanent display through an award winning interactive wall at the Boston Children’s Hospital. Features on her illustration have been in magazines around the world, including O Magazine, FLOW, Chatelaine, and Cosmopolitan – China.
