Biography

I have been writing for over a dozen years, starting with a few U.S. periodicals: School Arts Magazine, Arts and Activities, and ORION Magazine. I have always enjoyed writing and am also an English teacher. My profile highlights my new picture book, Night Spaces, about a young boy who cannot fall asleep. He and his father share great stories nightly, but on one night, the boy, Peter, goes on a quest of his own where he faces challenges and adventures in the shadows around his home. The book is great for discussions about shape and form via the shadows where Peter finds his foes and conquors them, as well as discussions about fears of sleeping alone, anxiety about the dark, and more. A love of reading has fostered many interests: art, history, science, fantasy, fairy tales, probability, behavioral sciences (a fancy way of saying I like reading books about thinking and rational/irrational behaviours), and popular economics.

I was born and grew up in Toronto and have enjoyed traveling widely—I have stood inside one of Dracula's castles in Transylvania, cruised south to the source of the Nile River in Africa, stood on the shore of the Arctic Ocean in Canada's far north, and of great personal importance, taken classes and walked in the footsteps of Charles Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, at Oxford University. Although I have no children of my own, I think of the hundreds of students taught over the years as my extended family. Additionally, I have a pet lizard, a Mali Uromastyx, named Max, who loves eating beans and seeds, never drinks water, and can stare for hours seemingly at nothing.
