Orysia has been making up and writing stories as long as she can remember. Her keen interest in human and animal behaviour, her love of animals and the natural environment, resulted in her first book about the use of livestock protection dogs to keep the peace between farmers and conservationists.  Her first novel was inspired by the story of her parents’ emigration from Ukraine to Canada after World War II, and how their traumas and culture shaped them and affected their offspring.  She especially enjoys writing for young people - from life on an island sheep farm, to coastal fishing communities where the possibilities of alternate life forms become real.

Kira's Secret - Creating a real world with fantasy

After introductions, I read excerpts of the book.  I ask if anyone has any questions, and from that follow up on any discussions that interest the audience. I talk about fantasy set in a real world, and how to create a fantasy world by researching and understanding what we already know from history and science.  If there is time, the students can write their own ideas of a fantasy world, and perhaps share a few of those with everyone.
