Suzanne Del Rizzo

Oakville, ON

Suzanne Del Rizzo plays with plasticine all day. She creates low-relief dimensional illustrations using plasticine, polymer clay, and mixed media which are then photographed or scanned for print. Suzanne illustrated Lisa Dalrymple’s Skink on the Brink (Fitzhenry & Whiteside), winner of the SCBWI Crystal Kite Award and finalist for the Rainforest of Reading Award, as well as Alison Hughes&;s new picture book Gerbil, Uncurled (Fitzhenry & Whiteside)  Spring 2015. She also illustrated mixed media and polymer clay elements for the cover of Marty Chan’s YA novel, The Ehrich Weisz Chronicles: Demon Gate (Fitzhenry & Whiteside).  Suzanne latest plasticine and paper sculpture illsutrations appear in SKY PIG, written by Jan Coates (Pajama Press) Spring 2016.  Above all, Suzanne loves the challenge of creating lovable and memorable characters, rich in textural detail, who are bursting with personality. She lives in Oakville, Ontario with her husband and four children.

Please note that all materials (plasticine, backer boards, table covering, etc), and material preparation will be the sole responsibility of the school staff and will need to be prepared and ready prior to my presentation. I can send a detailed breakdown of: estimated cost of materials, preparation instructions, hand-out PDFs and classroom/library set-up details, upon request.

My presentation workshops are very hands-on and fun. My goal is to inspire children to use their imagination and explore the medium of plasticine.

My presentation begins with a reading of Skink on the Brink. We discuss the book in a question and answer session discussing Stewie&;s journey, endangered animals and habitat protection. Afterwards we explore some of the illustrative choices I made in the book (perspective; expressions etc.) and discuss my process for creating my plasticine illustrations. Finally, to lead into their own artwork making, I show them my rough sketches and some original artwork and talk about the steps involved in making a book.  The children then head to their tables to create their own small illustration with the supplies available, while I interact on an individual basis.  This workshop is adapted in time and skill level to fit the age of the learners.

I would be happy to create other plasticine workshops to fit the specific audience or time of year, such as a Christmas or Easter themed activity.

Grades I will present to: JK-Grade 6(the workshop is flexible to be more in-depth for older children)

Maximum number of students per session: ~60

Venues I am comfortable in: classroom or library

Equipment and other requirements: material purchase and prep as mentioned above (will provide detailed info upon request), tables covered in plastic. It would be greatly appreciated if I have a teacher and another staff member to assist during my session.
